David Newey

David is one of the UK's most in-demand young acoustic guitar players, songwriters and singers. Currently he is touring with BBC Folk Musician of the Year Tom McConville, US Fiddle player and singer Christi Andropolis, as well as touring in support of his own new solo album, 'Cities and Power'.

A BBC Young Folk Musician of the Year finalist in 2003, David learnt guitar under Chris Newman, Martin Simpson, Martin Carthy, John Renbourn and many others. His own style is a combination of the flatpick and fingerstyle, which enables him to produce a unique sound - both huge and subtle. His song accompaniments have been featured on many albums - recently David has recorded with the group Rubus, and with Sandra Kerr, both albums receiving huge acclaim.

On the songwriting front, Tom Robinson (BBC Radio) called David's album 'A List of Names' 'A fantastic debut, great, powerful songs' - whilst Netrhythms said 'Certainly more than your average singer-writer'. His songs are of the personal and the political.

As a performer, David involves the audience; plenty of humour, storytelling and great music. His touring with Tom McConville is taking him around the world, seeing performances at all major UK festivals and work in the USA and Europe, whilst audiences are increasingly coming to see David in his own right.

'Unique and austere - brilliantly original songwriting'

Tom Robinson
